TBM Rail, the rail passenger comfort specialists were approached by a number of major rolling stock providers to solve an industry-wide WC problem. The progressive rail transport providers were seeking to ensure gravity fed WCs units never blocked to ensure the continued comfort of its travelling customers.
The rail transport industry has been dogged historically by blockages on gravity fed toilets. Often the simplest and smallest footprint WC option, gravity fed units have become infamous for blockages and resulting servicing problems.
Andrew Hawker, Managing Director of TBM Rail explains, “A number of companies shared with us data on service levels, usage figures and technical information. Working in partnership with specialist washroom manufacturer Franke, we have produced a bespoke gravity fed WC that dramatically reduces the incidents of blockages. It is impossible to remove the problem entirely as there is a small minority of the travelling public who seek to block WC purposely.”
The new Gravity Fed WC, pictured above, has now been installed in almost 200 trains. “We have completed one complete fleet change and because we also ensured that the new WC fits neatly into the existing footprint, we have saved the operator/owner time and labour costs.” concludes Andy.
